VIVAnews - Nokie Siemens Network has successfully conducted the world’s first LTE test handover using the commercial base station (BTS) and software which are fully according to the standards. The test is to assure that the LTE handover procedures could be handled properly by the BTS and LTE testing station from Nokia Siemens Networks.

Handover is the key feature in the mobile radio technology. The LTE test handover conducted was the first trial that complies with the LTE 3GPP standard (the relevant LTE standardization agency) which was set in March 2009.

In this initial test, the handover would be done among Nokia Siemens Network BTS LTE cells. Handover support is required to enhance connectivity when handling mobile incoming calls in which the users are moving from one mobile cell to another. This is the case when a user is constantly moving.

“Nokia Siemens Networks is focusing on commercial hardware and software, not pre-commercial mid-level solutions,“ Head of Nokia Siemens Networks Radio Access business unit says in a press release as quoted by VIVAnews on November 3.

Rouanne also mentions that the trial was based on previous handover support verification in the Evolved Packet Core Nokia Siemens Networks solutions for LTE main network, including Flexi NG and Flexi NS products. Qualified LTE network terminal and products is a requirement for commercial network establishment and are intended to provide the customers with various LTE devices and vendors.

Nokia Siemens Networks is committed to encourage commercial 3G implementation in 2010 by presenting complete solutions which would provide economical, simple and reliable paths to LTE in the future just by upgrading the software.
