VIVAnews - Indonesian telecommunication company PT Excelcomindo Pratama Tbk (XL) is working on undersea fiber-optic cables which will enable its customers gain access to international link.

"This year, we are still focusing on setting up fiber-optic cables mainly to Malaysia through Singapore," said XL Director of Commerce Joy Wahyudi on Friday, Nov 13.

"There are two lines. One is from the Malacca (Strait) and the other is from Johor. The Johor line has been set up while the Malacca one can only be completed by 2010," he said.

From Jakarta, Joy said, XL has two huge networks for international lines. "There is the network linked to Bangka, Batam, and then overseas. It can be to Singapore, Malaysia or Hong Kong. Everything will be installed under sea," he said.

"We have however prepared other alternatives. The land-site will be from Jakarta to Medan, while the other will be through Pekan Baru," said Joy.

When earthquake trembled West Sumatra in September, the lines connecting Medan and Padang were cut. At that time, Joy said, XL directly carry out network bypass from Padang to Pekan Baru.

XL viewed that two alternative lines in Medan and Pekan Baru are not enough. "Meanwhile, the lines from Medan, Pekan Baru, and Batam were just set up. For the time being, a line from Pekan Baru to Dumai is being prepared. There will be three linked cities in the future," said Joy.

"Batam will be the hub. From Batam, XL has three routes connected to Jakarta," he said.
