VIVAnews – The drugs smuggling case in Indonesia during 2008 – 2009 has been increasing, not only in number, but also in type. The Customs and Excise office has found for new types of psychotropic drugs.
Customs and Excise office’s director of measure and investigation (P2) Thomas Sugijata said that the narcotics which have entered Indonesia have been increasing in numbers along with the increasingly intensive effort from the P2, Indonesian Police, and the National Narcotics Office to deal with these cases.
“[The increasing number of incoming drugs] was caused by the strong effort from the police to find clandestine laboratories [that produce] the drugs,” Sugijata said in Jakarta on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
The absence of large laboratory to produce illegal drugs has boosted the supply of illegal drugs to enter Indonesia. Narcotics which normally smuggled into Indonesia include cocaine, methamphetamine hydrochloride (locally known as shabu-shabu), and ecstasy. The new types of drugs are namely happy five, MDA psychotropic, liquid meth, and ketamine tablets.
Sugijata explained that Iran has been the largest supplier for drugs in Indonesia based on its value since one kilogram of narcotics from Iran could reach Rp 2 billion, while the price in the origin country reaches only Rp 100 million per kilogram. “No wonder the business becomes a profitable one,” said Customs and Excise director general Anwar Suprijadi.
Meanwhile, Malaysia sits on the first place of drugs smuggling rate based on the cases found by the P2 office.
