VIVAnews - Thirty modern markets in Jakarta are accused of infringing Regional Decree No.2/2002 on Private Trading.
Chief of Indonesian Traditional Market Vendors Association (APPSI) Prabowo Subianto said the 30 markets have violated the article on zoning.
The Decree states that modern markets are not allowed to stand close to traditional marketplaces and have to be at least 2.5 kilometers away from each other.
“There are 30 modern markets in Jakarta which have broken the rule and it has affected 75 traditional markets,” Subianto said at the opinion-hearing meeting with the House of Representatives’ (DPR) Trade and Industry Commission on Tuesday, November 17.
He also assumed that the market mechanism applied by the government was a threat to traditional markets due to the widespread expansion of modern markets.
Indonesian Retailers Association (Aprindo) Head, Tutum Rahanta Lie said the retailers were not violating any rules. ”Don’t blame the retailers. Blame the developers who sought permissions from the local government to build the malls,” he said.
Lie also said that in seeking permissions to build malls or shopping centers, the developers always include master plans containing the list of future tenants in the buildings.
Meanwhile, he acknowledged that the retailers had proposed a complete permission to the developers.
Modern retailers that were allegedly violating the Decree are as follows, which are mostly Carrefour:
