VIVAnews - West Sumatra AIDS Commission recorded that 374 cases of HIV infection occurred along 2009. According to the commission's program coordinator Arfen Drinata, the number was based on the data provided by West Sumatra Health Agency in July.
"This shows a significant increase with as much as 100 percent compared to last year," Arfen told VIVAnews on Monday, Nov 30.
Last year, the HIV infection cases in West Sumatra reached 100. Most infections targeted drug users which made use of injection, reaching 50 percent of the total cases.
30 percent of infections were transmitted through free sex practices.
The infections mostly affect those of 20 years until 30 years of age. He saw that the case is like the tip of an iceberg.
Padang and Bukittinggi are places where the highest infection case can be found.
HIV infections in West Sumatra increase every year. This is a result of the weak campaign on the disease.
