VIVAnews - 2009 marks the escalation of death rate in Indonesian prisons having several factors as its causes.
"A total of 778 inmates were dead in prisons and detention centers along 2009," said Director General of Penitentiary Untung Sugiono in Jakarta on Thursday, Dec 31.
According to him, the number of the dead rose compared to 2008 at 750.
Diseases and overcapacity have been the main problems found. "Most of the inmates had been ill prior to being put behind the bar," he said.
Untung said the imprisonment period of the deceased in detention centers were varied ranging from one month to six months.
As many as 166 inmates died during their detention period of between seven and 12 months. Another 103 passed away after being jailed for more than a year.
