VIVAnews - The government will be giving a second chance for students failing the national exams by allowing them to sit for remedial tests. Paket C exams will still be available.

“National exams will still be held properly, including increasing the quality and this year, there will be remedial exams,” National Education Minister M Nuh said during a press conference at the President’s office in Jakarta on Wednesday, January 7.

Students who are not able to take the national exams would also be allowed to sit for supplementary tests. “For instance, for those who are sick during the exam period,” the Minister said.

The decision to hold remedial tests was made after President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono led a closed meeting with the Nuh at the President’s office. The meeting was also attended by Vice President Boediono and other ministers of Indonesia Unite Cabinet Part 2.

According to Nuh, the decision was based on the graduation standardization retrospective. From the pre-independence era to 1971, the government has actually been holding national exams.

However, in 1972 up until 1992, the authority to set graduation standards was given to the schools. “As a result, the students always passed because there were ocial issues ensued,” Nuh said.

From 1992 to 2002, the government again changed the system by combining national exams with the tests held by each school. The combination was known as Ebtanas.

Afterwards, the Ebtanas was replaced by the national exams which have been applied until now. “So, the government has been trying various methods since long time ago,” he said.
