VIVAnews - Until today, Chinese products are still considered dominating the electronic market in Indonesia.
Based on the Trade Ministry’s observation on the imports of five certain products, 34 percent of imported electronics were coming from China while the rest are from Hong Kong and India.
“Of the five products, the highest number of imports was electronics, in the forms of cell phones and laptop computers, which are worth US$ 2.4 billion, most of them were from China,” International Trade General Director, Diah Maulida said at a press conference at the office of Trade Ministry in Jakarta on Wednesday, March 10.
Through Trade Ministerial Decree No 56 /2008, the government oversees imports of five products like footwear, electronics, textile and textile products, toys and food and beverages, only through five harbors.
Aside from electronics, four other kinds of product are also dominated by China.
Maulida also said the value of imports of textile and textile products had reached US$100 million, which was coming from China (42 percent), Spain and England. Toy imports were worth US$46 million, in which 70 percent were sent from China and the rest were from Hong Kong and Malaysia.
Meanwhile, US$63 million worth of footwear imports were having 50 percent of the products shipped from China while the rest were coming from Singapore, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Spain (for branded products). Number of food and beverage imports had reached US$171 million with Malaysia dominating the market by 18 percent and the rest of the items were from Thailand and China.
Deputy Minister of Trade Mahendra Siregar acknowledged the fact that China has been dominating Indonesian imports within the past three years. “Chinese imports are the biggest in Indonesia. The market share is up to 18 percent,” he said.
However, as Indonesia’s exporting partner, China will keep going until it reaches the top position. Currently, China is still in the second position.
“In the next five years, exports to China will be increasing gradually. It will soon become number one. China and Indonesia will establish mutually beneficial trade partnership,” Siregar said.
