VIVAnews - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) firmly stated that Indonesia will be serious in setting-up cross-border collaboration with ASEAN countries to go after fugitives and corruptors overseas.
“A lot of corruptors have their own safe haven abroad, including in our neighboring countries. We won’t let it happen any longer. That’s why we have to establish this cooperation,” SBY said before attending a meeting on the preparation of the 16th ASEAN Summit in Hanoi, Vietnam on Thursday, April 8.
The said collaboration will be discussed during the Summit, which will be themed ‘Towards the ASEAN Community: From Vision to Action’. Cross-border crimes like drug smuggling, human trafficking, illegal fishing, illegal logging and criminals and corruptors pursuit are the ones that will be jointly overcome in the collaboration.
“In short, Indonesia emphasizes on cross-border cooperation on non-traditional mischief,” the president said.
The 16th Summit will also talk about other specific issues such as regional architecture that includes making ASEAN regions more efficient and competitive and the latest situation in Myanmar.
