VIVAnews - Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) has established Unpad Teaching Hospital amid the low number of medical faculties that have their own educational hospitals.

Unpad Teaching Hospital will be supporting Bandung’s Hasan Sadikin Hospital, which is located right in front of it.

“Conceptually, Unpad Hospital will be the Hospital of Educational Excellence to complete the main teaching hospital, which is Hasan Sadikin,” Unpad Rector Ganjar Kurnia said at Unpad Teaching Hospital Auditorium in Bandung on April 27.

According to him, Unpad Hospital will be used as the center of research and development for specialized medical education. The hospital will be developed as one of Hasan Sadikin’s advanced services units.

“We are currently focusing on medical and advanced medical services for infectious and oncological diseases. These are what we’ll be focusing on the research,” Kurnia said.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Education Fasli Jalal, who inaugurated the teaching hospital, said other teaching hospitals were expected to develop medical science and prepare future doctors to work in other hospitals.

“We expect teaching hospitals to establish a world-class research and contribute to the society,” Jalal said.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih, who also attended the inauguration, said other teaching hospitals should look up to the collaboration between Hasan Sadikin and Unpad.

“Some of the teaching hospitals haven’t been able to form harmonious relationships with the local hospitals administered by the Health Ministry,” Sedyaningsih said.

The minister has also offered opportunities to collaborate with foreign parties in vaccine research. Indonesia has signed an MoU on Science and Technology with several universities overseas such as the George Washington University.

She reminded the researchers to make the most of the opportunities. They are expected to compose proper proposals to gain good responses from the universities.

“We don’t want to be only a vaccine user. We want to develop the vaccines. In these collaborations, we’ll also get technological support from the foreign parties,” she said.
