VIVAnews - The development in Seribu Islands has not apparently been supported by good order in permit applications. Out of scores of Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) on the islands, only 10 have the permits while 70 are illegal with no establishment permits.
“Of 80 existing towers, only ten of them hold the permits. The rest are illegal,” Seribu Islands Public Communications and Information Unit’s Information Technology and Telecommunication Officer Yurni says, as reported by the website of Jakarta Provincial Government, beritajakarta.com on Monday, May 17.
Several telecommunication companies still underestimate permit issues due to weak supervision in Seribu Islands. “Summons for the BTS owners have been sent. But they never came,” Yurni said.
The illegal towers are known to be owned by some of the major telecommunication companies in Indonesia. Of the total number, there are also 12 unused towers with deteriorating condition.
Islands where the illegal towers are located include Tongkeng Island, Matahari Island and Kelapa Island, which is in North Pulau Seribu sub district.
In South Seribu Island district, unauthorized towers are built on Pari Island, Tidung Island and Lancang Island. “There are also some on tourist islands, such as Bidadari Island. We’ll work together with Seribu Islands Building Supervisory Unit,” she said.
Jakarta Public Communications and Information Agency’s Telecommunication Division Head Yodida Y said the growing number of illegal BTS towers has become the ‘homework’ of the local government.
The area is indeed in need of telecommunication facilities, which has caused a dilemma. According to Yodida, a BTS establishment has to meet the applicable requirements, such as obtaining permit from the local housing complex head, Urban Planning Unit and Building Supervisory Unit.
The owners also have to get permission from the Public Communications and Information Department to set up the devices as well as a recommendation letter from the Environmental Management Agency and a permit from the Building Supervisory Unit.
