VIVAnews - Eighty three Afghan immigrants were stranded on Salura Island, East Sumba regency, East Nusa Tenggara on Tuesday, June 29. They were reportedly on their way to seek safe haven in Australia since last week.
The local government and officials were having difficulties evacuating the immigrants from the uninhabited island due to high waves, which was up to three-meters high.
East Sumba Administration Assistant Samuel Pekulimu told VIVAnews that according to the report obtained, among the 83 immigrants, there are 15 women and 12 children.
“They were stranded after their boat to Australia was smashed by the waves. They were discovered by the people near Salura Island. The government has sent logistics and the evacuation is expected to be done immediately,” Pekulimu said.
According to the plan, the immigrants will be staying at East Sumba Police Station while waiting for coordination with immigration international agency International Organization Migration to pick them up in East Sumba.
