Survey: Those Behind Poverty Line Decrease

The number of those living behind poverty lines reach 31.02 million.

VIVAnews - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has just released the 2010 national census, which emphasizes issue on poverty rate.

According to BPS head, Rusman Heriawan, the agency applies ability on meeting basic needs as its the key element. Based on the approach, people categorized as poor are those having monthly expenditure behind national standards. 

"Poverty line is the parameter to decide whether or not someone is poor," said Rusman as quoted from the survey. The poverty line is made upon two components: Food Poverty Line; and Non-food Poverty Line.

Such a concept is not only applied by the BPS, but also other coutries like Armenia, Senegal, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Vietnam, Sierra Leone, and Gambia. Due to the concept, poverty is seen as an economic inability to meet the basic needs.

The BPS survey conducted between March 2009 and March 2010 shows that the Indonesian poverty line increases by 5.72 percent from Rp 200,262 per month in March 2009 to Rp 211,726 per capita per mont in March 2010.

Up until March 2010, the number of those living behind poverty lines reach 31.02 million, a 1.51 million lower than March 2009.
