VIVAnews - 6 years ago, today, on 24 December 2002, Rahardi Ramelan was found guilty of corruption involving the misuse of funds belonging to Indonesian Logistics Agency (Bulog)

Rahardi Ramelan, former Indonesian Trade Minister under Habibie administration, was found guilty of two corruption charges on 24 December 2002. According to Judge Lalu Mariyun of the South Jakarta District Court, the former head of Indonesian Logistics Agency (Bulog) was found guilty of corruption related to a scandal over the misuse of government funds. The Court sentenced him to two years in prison and ordered him to pay US$40,000 in restitution.

Ramelan was the head of Bulog when he illegally authorized the withdrawal of US$40,000 from its account to finance a pro-government press campaign. He was also guilty of approving a loan of US$460,000 from Bulog to Goro Batara Sakti, a private company owned by Tommy Soeharto, one of the sons of former president Soeharto.

Ramelan appealed to a higher court but both the Jakarta Higher Court and the Supreme Court overruled his appeal.
