VIVAnews - In 2009, the East Jakarta administration has exterminated 1.609 poultry which consisted of 746 chickens, 34 ducks, 703 pigeons, and 126 geese. The extermination was taken as the result of sweeping in 10 sub districts from January 1 to May 20, 2009.

The poultry were exterminated by slaughtering them on the spot. After being slaughtered, the poultry were returned to the owner to be consumed.

In addition to performing the extermination, the field officers of East Jakarta Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Agency also campaigned the Local Regulations No.4 /2007 on Poultry Breeding and Circulation in DKI Jakarta.

Head of East Jakarta Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Agency, Adnan Ahmad, said that so far, the poultry sweeping was done based on the report delivered by the local residents through the Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Agency in their sub district.

In the future, the sub district authorities are expected to report to the Agency if there are still many poultry found in their area without waiting for the reports from the residents.

Thus, the goal of making East Jakarta free from poultry can be achieved.

“We will be doing the poultry sweeping in the areas of East Jakarta every week, especially in the sub districts”, he said as quoted by the official site of Jakarta authorities.

According to the Local Regulations No. 4/ 2007, the people of DKI Jakarta are not allowed to breed poultry in the housing areas. Poultry that are used for educational or research purposes must be certified by the local Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Agency.
