VIVAnews - Violent acts experienced by Indonesian labors working overseas have raised a concern of two vice presidential candidates, Wiranto and Prabowo Subianto. They agreed that an advocate to help the labors is required.
“Indonesian labors contribute foreign exchange to the country”, Prabowo said during the beginning of his explanation about the Indonesian labors’ condition while shooting “Presidential Candidate Goes to the Market” show at the Block A market in Tanah Abang, Jakarta on Wednesday, June 17. “They also help the economy,” he added
Therefore, according to Prabowo, the incidents are appalling. On the other side, the labors are meritorious, “on the other hand, they are weak because they are not insured and they are overseas”, he said.
That is why Prabowo suggested adding more Indonesian consulates abroad. The number of legal experts and advocates are also required to be increased.
Wiranto, who spoke after Prabowo, had the same idea. Formally, Wiranto said, a legal aid institution (LBH) needs to be formed under the Foreign Affairs Department and the Embassies. “It is to give a legal assistance to the Indonesian labors overseas”, former Indonesian Army Commander said.
Secondly, a skill improvement is also required. Most of the labors sent out of the country are domestic workers. “We have to send experts in the future, like chefs and others,” Wiranto said.
“Presidential Candidate Goes to the Market” show involves all of the president candidates. Each candidate appeared in one episode. However, Prabowo and Wiranto did the filming together which makes it look like a debate session.
