Christian Utz, composer and musicologist, was born in Munich. He is the professor for music theory and music analysis at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts, Graz. Utz received major artistic impulses from Erich Urbanner, Dieter Kaufmann, Wolfgang Rihm, Mauricio Kagel, Luca Francesconi, Brian Ferneyhough, Salvatore Sciarrino and Helmut Lachenmann.

In the early phases of his artistic development, Utz tried to free compositional concepts from conventional boundaries by exploring concepts spanning the fields of music and theatre, composition and improvisation, instrumental and electronic music. Since 1998 intercultural collaborations and concepts have become the centre of Utz’ compositional activities that are documented on his CDs: Site (2002) and Transformed (2008). In 1998 he founded AsianCultureLink to enhance intercultural exchange between European and Asian artists.

ensemble on_line was founded in 1991. Under the artistic direction of Simeon Pironkoff, the ensemble concentrates on contemporary music and on questioning how paradigmatic works of the 20th and 21st century can be realized, reflecting an extended concert situation according to the requirements of our present.

For their performance in Festival Salihara 2009, ensemble on_line will present works by world-prominent composers.

On the first day, they will present works by Iannis Xenakis, Anton von Webern, Wolfgang Rihm, Slamet Abdul Sjukur, Gerard Grisey, as well as works by Christian Utz.

On the second day, they will present works by Bernhard Lang, Alban Berg, Christian Utz (world premiere), Tony Prabowo (Indonesia premiere), and Pierre Boulez

On the second day, before the performance, at 05:00 p.m., Christian Utz will address a public lecture on composers and cultural globalization for free.

The performance is a joint program between Komunitas Salihara, the Embassy of Austria, Germany's Federal Foreign Office, and Goethe Institut (Source: salihara.org).
