VIVAnews - The penetration of online media in nine major cities in Indonesia has increased constantly since 2006 due to cheaper internet connection in Indonesia.

A survey, which was conducted by the Nielsen Media, revealed that the internet penetration in 2006 was only 8 percent. During the second quarter of 2009, the penetration has increased to 17 percent. “The internet never stop growing,” Associate Director, Client Service of Nielsen Media Indonesia, Ika Jatmikasari said at her office at the Mayapada Tower, Jakarta on Thursday, June 16.

The survey, which was done in Jakarta, Bandung, Surabaya, Jogjakarta, Medan, Palembang, Makassar, Denpasar and three buffer zones around Jakarta, Surabaya, and Jogjakarta, has indicated that the penetration of print media has decreased.

In 2005, the penetration of newspaper was 28 percent and went down to 19 percent during the second quarter of 2009. The same trend occurred in magazines and tabloids. The penetration of both media dropped from 20 percent to 13 percent for magazines and 12 percent for tabloids.

“The data shows that people have lacked interest in reading,” Jatmikasari said.

Readers in nine cities chose Kompas, Jawa Pos, and Pos Kota as their daily newspaper. In weekly magazines category, Bobo topped the list followed by Gadis and Tempo.

Misteri, Kartini, and Aneka Yess! were the top three in two-weekly magazine category. Listed in the monthly magazines category were Hidayah, Trubus, and Cosmo Girl.

In gender-based readership category, most men chose Pulsa, Bola, Soccer, and Motor Plus while women prefer Pulsa, Nova, Gaul, and Genie.

Nielsen also found that the penetration of TV was still stagnant in the level of 94 percent. TV penetration has been in the range of between 92 and 95 percent since 2005.

“This is the highest penetration in Asia Pacific”, Jatmiksari said.
