VIVAnews - Mohammed Yusuf, the leader of Islamic fundamental group in Nigeria, was pronounced death following the attack by government troops in Maiduguri on Thursday, July 30, local time.
Meanwhile, according to CNN, Nigerian military claimed earlier that Yusuf had been captured in a good physical condition and would be handed over to the police.
Spokesperson of Borno Governor, Usman Ciroma said “I just returned from the police station and saw the body.” Ciroma was sure Yusuf was shot to death because there were several gunshot wounds in his body.
Yusuf’s group is known as “Boko Haram”. The group wants the government to impose Islamic law or sharia in North Nigeria which is dominated by the Muslims.
Sharia has been implemented in some Northern states but the group wishes the law to be intensified. They are also against Western values education.
At least 400 opposing group members, government troops, and civilians have been killed since the conflict broke last Sunday. The fight led to the arrest of several Boko Haram members.
The group performed its rebellious act by attacking the police, military and government institutions in Bauchi. The attack quickly spread to other areas which required the government to assign more troops to handle the situation.
