VIVAnews - Bamboo buildings are apparently more shock resistant during an earthquake than building made of cement and bricks, according to Gunawan Cahyono, an architecture professor from the University of Indonesia, during a discussion in Jakarta on Monday night, Sept. 14.
He explained that the society thinks that bamboo buildings will lower their prestige, despite the fact that the material is stronger than cement for building. With the present technology and architecture, bamboo material will be able to have beautiful and sophisticated design.
However, the bamboo house will have to comply to the earthquake sustainability standards if there is a stronger quake.
Businessman Arifin Panigoro said that the development of bamboo houses is hampered by the insufficient human resources.
"The craftsmen move to the city, so the traditional craftsmen now are less," said Panigoro.
Panigoro explained that it is relevant now for West Java area to develop bamboo or wooden housing, considering the recent earthquake. Furthermore, the wood and bamboo supply is high in the area.
"3-year-old bamboo apparently can be used [for building]," he said.
