Oct. 19-21: Wong Kar-Wai Movies

Bentara Budaya Jakarta will screen Wong Kar-Wai's movies.

In the 90s, Wong Kar-Wai, a Hong Kong script writer and director, set his stream on making romantic drama films amidst the fast-growing action movie genre in the Hong Kong film industry in that period. He succeeded presented his works in the international realm. Some critics said that Wong took his inspirations from the early movies of the French new wave director's, Jean-Luc Godard.

He was born in 1958 in Shanghai, China, and learnt graphic design in Hong Kong. He enjoys photography, and made his way in the movie industry through television dramas. He became a talented script writer, and his first feature movie, As Tears Go By, a gangster movie made in 1988, received a wide applause in Hong Kong. Until now, Wong has produced more than ten movies which are celebrated by movie critics, including hid first English movie, My Blueberry Nights (2007).

Bentara Budaya Jakarta will retrospectively screen eight movies from Wong Kar-Wai, which will also feature director Garin Nugroho in a discussion.
