VIVAnews - Jakarta Governor Fauzi Bowo met with the US Head of Environmental Agency, Lisa P Jackson, on Wednesday, October 21 on her visit to Indonesia. The two discussed about the implementation of environmental quality improvement in Jakarta.
The Governor said the meeting also aimed at creating more eco-friendly community. “I explained to her about all of the problems, including the pollution. The main concern is to turn people’s mindset from thinking into doing something,” he said.
Bowo also said Jakarta provincial government actually had a lot of great programs to improve the quality of environment. However, due to the lack of human resources, the programs could not be implemented properly.
At the meeting, the United States promised to give out examples of legal implementations in other countries. The country also offered a program to increase the quality of water in Jakarta. “We’ll collaborate to carry out the programs, “Bowo said.
According to him, Jakarta’s air is getting cleaner which is indicated by the decrease of pollution level. Based on the results of an observation from 2000 to 2007, the air quality keeps advancing while the level of pollution continuously declining.
“This is because the local government issued a Regional Regulation No. 2/ 2005 on Air Pollution Control which oversees the control measures of indoor and outdoor air pollutions,“ he said.
World Health Organization (WHO) declared Jakarta as the world’s third dirtiest city after Mexico and Thailand for its really high pollution level.
The biggest contributor to the pollution is the vehicles which contribute up to 70 percent.
The uncontrollable escalation in the number of vehicles has also deteriorated the air quality.
