VIVAnews - The Indonesian Consumer Foundation (YLKI) released its research conducted in July 2009 showing that 80 percent of public transport violated the Non-smoking Area (KDM) policy.
Tulus Abadi, a member of the foundation said on Thursday, October 22, about the issue.
He said that the statement was based on a survey organized over 1,000 responders who complained against smokers in public transport in Jakarta, the Indonesian capital.
In fact, the regulations on the non-smoking area have been issued: Provincial Regulation No.2/2005 and Governor's Regulation No.75 on Non-smoking Area.
The regulations highlight that smokers are prohibited to smoke in seven areas: public service spots, religious scenes, schools, children's amusement park, public transportation, public spaces and working areas.
As for public transportation, smokers are totally banned from smoking. However, the survey underscored that most smokers in public transportation are the drivers.
In detail, the survey noted that 43 percent of smokers in public transport are the drivers, 40 percent are the passengers and 17 percent are the drivers' assistants.
