VIVAnews - Indonesia and other South East Asian countries would be affected by the worst climate change. There would be longer summer, higher sea levels and millions of people would experience floods every year.

“In one century, the sea levels in South East Asia would go up to 80 centimeter, causing 33 millions of people to be dealing with floods every year. It’s all because South East Asia has lower grounds,” British Ambassador to Indonesia, Martin Hatfull, said at the British Embassy office in Jakarta on Friday, October 23.

Hatfull’s statement was delivered during the launch of 4 Celsius Degrees Temperature Rise Map. The map depicts the effects of climate change if the world’s countries could not hold back the rise of temperature below 2 Celsius degrees. The impacts would appear in the next five years.

The map, which was made by the British government and the Met Office Hadley Centre using the HadCM3 QUMP device, indicates that the temperature rise on earth is uneven. Lands and polar areas will be heated up faster.

The rise would mostly affect the agricultural sector in the forms of water shortage and drought. More forest fire would occur and the sea levels would increase.

Hatfull also said Indonesia plays an important role in overcoming global warming. He praised Indonesia’s commitment to reduce carbon emission between 26 and 41 percent in 2002.

“The British government will be helping Indonesia to gain funds from international forums like the Copenhagen Summit next month,“ he said.

He also expects the newly elected State Minister for the Environment, Gusti Muhammad Hatta, would work hard in preparing the Indonesian delegations for the Summit. Meanwhile, the British government would continue helping in other areas such as forest management.
